This course will focus on speech intelligibility according to Chapter 24 requirements and Annex D guidance found in NFPA 72 ‘National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code’. As new technology advances fire alarm and signaling systems, voice notifications play an important role in providing clear instructions to building occupants in an emergency situation. Speech intelligibility measures how understandable voice communication is under given conditions. The presenter will discuss when systems need to be intelligible and the basic design principles that apply. Participants will also learn how to conduct a systematic acceptance test when required by the project specifications.
Learning Objectives:
•Determine when systems need to be intelligible
•Learn when audibility may be used in lieu of intelligibility
•Understand proper acceptance testing of system intelligibility
