This course covers the unique fire protection and life safety challenges associated with high-rise buildings. The discussion includes an explanation of the origin and definition of high-rise as well as very tall buildings. The presentation reviews the primary Life Safety Code and the model Building Code provisions related to these structures. The wide range of challenges associated with such building is also presented along with mandated requirements intended to address them. This includes discussion of the building design related to the structural integrity of the building, management of fire/smoke spread within the structure, fire department operations, occupant notification, and evacuation scenarios.
