Course Description: NFPA 72 ‘National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code’ provides safety provisions that impact most commercial projects throughout the country. This code is updated every three years, yet few people understand how the code revision process works. This course will discuss the NFPA codes and standards development process including how changes are proposed and the steps that must be taken before a code revision is approved. The presenter will provide several practical examples of proposed revisions that were successful and some that were not successful to illustrate the process. Finally, significant fire events that fueled changes to the fire alarm and building codes will be reviewed to understand their impact when updating codes and standards.
