Automatic Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) use is expanding in retail, warehousing and distribution facilities bringing new fire risks that need to be considered. A review of several notable fires involving ASRS will be presented to illustrate the importance of proper fire protection with these systems. Participants will learn about the types of ASRS structures including mini-load, shuttle-loading, vertically enclosed and top-loading as well as a discussion on the various container types. The presenter will introduce provisions in NFPA 13 ‘Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems’ and FMDS 8-34 related to ASRS to emphasize the need for proper fire protection in coordination with the use of these systems.
Learning Objectives:
•Understand the fire risk associated with Automatic Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS)
•Determine when specific fire protection is needed for ASRS mini-load, shuttle-loading, vertically enclosed and top-loading type systems
•Recognize existing provisions within NFPA 13 and FMDS 8-34 and the importance of proper fire protection coordination when using ASRS
